I have been quoted for my conveyancing and the disbursements have come back over £16,000!! What on earth is this?

Hi Jander,

Disbursements are made up of the following:

• Stamp duty
• H M Land Registry fees
• Official Copy Entries and Plan
• Searches

In your case the reason the fees are so high is because the solicitor or conveyancer has included the stamp duty payable for your property type in your quote. Please note this does not go into their pocket! It is paid to the government. So when you deduct the disbursements you will uncover the actual cost of their conveyancing work.

I will add that disbursements are actually costs or sums that the solicitor will face when carrying out the conveyancing for you to aquire a property. That's why these fees do not represent the actual 'charges' the solicitor earns from you.
